The 2014 Hot Rod Hobbies Shootout was held July 17th-20th at Hot Rod Hobbies in Saugus, California. This would be the first year where the Shootout schedule would change to a 3 qualifier format on Saturday and Main Events on Sunday. This eliminating 1 extra day of qualifying to help bring in more racers. This strategy would pay off as the final entry count reach 270! With temperatures in the mid to upper 80′s all weekend long, it was going to be a very comfortable and exciting weekend of racing. Read more…

ROAR outlaws new style 1/10 wheels

    July 22, 2014 - 20:07 by Mike Garrison 1 Comment

ROAR has announced today that the “new style” 1/10 wheels and tires (AKA EVO Series and Pro-Line VTR Series), are in fact illegal for competition use at ROAR sanctioned events for the remainder of 2014. While the organization has not ruled them out for eternity, this ruling does rule them out for the upcoming ROAR 1/10 Offroad Nationals in Florida. The new style wheels are actually a 2.4″ design, as opposed to the traditional 2.2″ wheel, and mount up like an 1/8 scale buggy wheel and tire. Currently AKA offers a conversion to make their EVO style tires fit traditional wheels, however, as ROAR sees this as a modification to the wheels (which is not allowed), they have also deemed the conversions illegal for use.  Read more…

This weekend marked the first round of the Mugen Grand Prix in Chula Vista, California. There were plenty of local fast guys in attendance including Cody Smith, who won the Hitec race on this layout, and track manager Don Vinkemulder. With only 20 minutes of practice Cody went to work right away with a TQ run in round 1 of qualifying, which would stand giving Cody the pole position.

On the first lap of the 30 minute final, Cody bobbled over the “wooden wash board” and surrendered the lead to 2nd qualifier Cody Smith. Read more…

    Novotny invades Czech “Oldies” Nats

    July 22, 2014 - 17:52 by Mike Garrison 0 Comments

Czech Team Durango race ace, Kaja Novotny, has recently taken another win at the relaxed and family focused 40+ Czech Nationals in Horni Jelini. Kaja took part in a guest 1/8 E-Buggy class at the event, with many younger racers attending to work as pit help for the senior racers at this prestigious annual senior race meeting. Racing his DEX408v2 to secure three of the four fast paced qualifying rounds, Kaja then went on to take overall first place and also place the fastest track lap during the finals. Another great victory for the Czech star and another solid performance for the DEX408v2 1/8 Electric Buggy.
