Race report by Mustafa Alp:
Round 3 of XRAY TORC series was held at Bumod Bursa on 25-26th of June. Weekend started off with super hot weather exceeding 37°C, but ended again with some rainy drama. Friday was relaxed with people trying some different setups in free practise. My NT1 and T4 was always very consistent and easy to drive. NT1 was tending to push a little but this was same for everyone mainly because of the nature of the track.
Saturday started good for me as I top seeded in practise and TQ ed first 2 qualifiers, but in Q3&Q4 I had strange problem with the car, acting funny in right turns, like bouncing and getting out of control. While not sure whether this was about some mechanical or electronic issue, I completely rebuilt my car on Saturday night up to 2 o’clock in the midnight, to make sure everything is perfect, and also changing diffs, servos to leave no chance to have a problem. Sunday morning, I tried out the car to see it was OK again and had a relief. I took also Q5 and had overall TQ in front of Halit who took Q3 and Q4, and Alain finishing 3rd overall in qualifiers with consistent runs every round.
A Main started at 4 PM with cool and cloudy weather. I had a good lead right from the start and never looked back, increasing my lead to 3 laps in about 25 minutes. Car was super consistent and easy to drive at the limits. At that mark, just before I had a scheduled tyre change, rain started and cars began sliding at the track. I took a new set of foam tires when everyone were doing 35-40 second laps instead of 20s, and this idea was mainly because I thought rain would stop and track would get dry and fast quickly again. Unfortunately at tyre change my engine stalled and glow plug died, which led to further loss of time. When I got back to track after a 2 minute lap, I was 5-6 meters behind new leader Halit. He then made a spin and I passed him, later on he came to pits for a slick set of tires. Now I again had a 2 lap lead to 2nd place, then rain got really severe and race was finished. Some discussions were made about when the race should have been stopped, as for everyone it was a different strategy about tires and stuff. Anyways, race finished at 26 minute mark, and at that point I was the leader, Halit 2nd, Sertac 3rd.
This was probably one of the races that I enjoyed most. With me and Ahmet deciding to not buy new set of tires, race got really challenging with Kağan and Murat. I took Top seed and TQ in the Q1, where Kağan took Q2. Murat took Q3 with super close result with top 3 in 0.7 seconds. Then Ahmet took Q4 0.8 seconds in front of me, which meant Q5 in Sunday morning would be the decider for overall TQ. I took Q5 0.8 seconds in front of Ahmet to secure overall TQ, which was crucial for so tight competition. Ahmet came 2nd overall, and Murat 3rd, Kağan 4th.
A1 was a superb race for me, Murat and Ahmet, and also the spectators. I took a good start with about 2 meters lead to Ahmet, who had a very charged Murat behind with a brand new set of tires. Early in the race he passed Ahmet and already got close to me. Then he made a good move and got in front only to lose it next corner. I was defending like crazy and he was very patient and respectful, and this created a very enjoyable race. With my battle with Murat, Ahmet got closer us, making it a 3 horse race for the final minutes. All 3 of us made no mistakes and finished in that order, 1.3 seconds covering top 3.
In A2, Murat had the scent of the win so he bought another set of tires 😀 But this time weather was very hot and advantage of a new tire was less, and faded away more quickly. Ahmet was successful defending his 2nd position in the start of the race, which resulted me to have a breathing room of 2 seconds, and we finished in starting order.
I already wrapped up the title but decided to run again to have good battle. In the afternoon, where cooler and more humid conditions were present, traction was higher, favoring me more than the competition, I had a very fast and consistent run, finishing 4 seconds in front of Ahmet. Murat had a moved motor which resulted the spur gear to strip, and Kağan finished 3rd.
All the weekend my T4 was superb with no problems at all. I only refreshed shocks and did not touch the setup of the car at all, from Round 2 Izmir. This proves the car is working very good on different conditions, leaving no hassle for the driver. Also, as a team with Ahmet, Murat, Kağan, and many others, we all drive 95% same setup which works for everyone, leaving the battle only at the drivers stand. I enjoy this a lot as I get improved as well, with defence/attack and super close racing.
Many thanks to my sponsors and my buddy Halit Korpe who made another great organisation who constanly improves some stuff every race, even though most dont realise. My mechanic and very close friend Umut Turkay for fast fuelstops in Nitro touring and his general help about life in general.
