The 27th Annual Pro-Line April Fools Classic hosted by Murf’s Intermountain R/C Raceway in Salt Lake City, UT, attracted over 250 entries from all over the western United States. As one of the longest-running events in the country, the heritage of the April Fools Classic is undeniable, and with a new facility racers were excited for the next chapter.
Team Associated was in attendance with I.F.M.A.R. World Champion and defending April Fools title holder, Steven Hartson, and Tanner Denney, both making the trip to meet up with local Rob Gillespie Jr. With a challenging and tight layout, patience and corner speed were at a premium and Gillespie Jr. had both.
Taking the TQ in both Truck Modified with his RC10T5M and 2WD Modified with his RC10B5M, Gillespie was poised for the finals as he also qualified second in 4WD Modified with his RC10B44.3. Denney and Hartson joined him in the 2WD Modified main and Truck Modified, and 4WD Modified respectively.
As the main events got underway Sunday morning, Gillespie Jr. was on point and ready to compete. Taking a victory in A1 and A2 of Truck Modified, Gillespie Jr. sewed up his first title with a good challenge from teammate Tanner Denney, leading a 1-2-3 podium sweep for the T5M.
In 2WD Modified and 4WD Modified, Gillespie Jr. got the wins in A1 and looked to seal up the titles in A2. However it wasn’t to be and the titles had to be settled in A3. With a calm and determined mindset, the young Utah native completed the three-class sweep by winning both of the remaining main events in front of a very supportive hometown crowd.
Special thanks goes out to the April Fools staff and locals who made the team feel so welcome, and congratulations on your new facility. We look forward to returning again next year.
