Lim wins Malaysian National League Rd.2

David Lim MNL

Round 2 of the Malaysia National League was run this past weekend. Didier Perrin (Mugen/OS/AKA) took TQ after 5 rounds of qualifying in the Pro Class. In the Open class it was Danny Kato who secured TQ honors. The 10 year old has taken a huge step forward this year, his Kyosho/OS car was on rails in qualifying and he drove with maturity way beyond his years. Another of the young guns Ryan Stocek (Xray/Fx) was showing his improving pace, fast and aggressive he is another future driver to watch.

The semi final is often viewed as the most difficult of races in 1/8th scale. It’s the gateway to the final and there is no second chance. A couple of drivers felt that pain. Disaster for Didier in his semi, leading the race he broke the front arm of the Mugen and despite a quick change of arm he would not bump in to the final.

Semi B was a great race between Ben Panic (Kyosho/OS/JConcepts) and Jason Nugroho (Xray/Novarossi/Sweep) they battled along with Kelvin Yong (Xray/Fx) for the first 15 minutes with the lead swapping constantly in the slick conditions. Jason and Ben pulled out a lead on Kelvin after the last fuel stops and they would finish 2 seconds apart after 25 minutes. The semi also hit hard for Kelvin. He went through post race tech and failed on fuel capacity. He would not start in the final.

The final was another great race, David Lim (Kyosho/OS/James) got the best of the start after a first corner pile up which saw Ben and Jason drop back. Starting at the front Ben and Jason did not have the advantage they should have. With 3 doubles at the end of the straight position one and two on the grid did not have the run up to make the first jumps. They both had to single single and the field jumped straight in to them. Not a great beginning to the final for the front-runners. Starting in position three David pulled a nice lead and had clear track. Ben and Jason spent 15 minutes fighting back to the front and began to chase David. In the drying condition Ben had a faster car than Jason and the Indonesian driver gave him room to get after David. It would be a battle for the 45 minutes; running similar pace David kept the gap to Ben, the Kyohso drivers putting a lap on third place. Although they never got to run side by side you could sense that it was only a mistake away from being a wheel to wheel race. In the end that did not happen, they finished the way they had raced with Kyosho taking a 1,2,3 with BH Gan wrapping up the third place on the podium.
