Mike Champ wins at Big Kahuna Memorial Race

Mike Champ reports – “Layout for the Kahuna hosted at the at Proving Grounds was very open and really fast. Right of the bat, my SC-R was on rail using Panther slicks in Clay compound. 162 entries for this event, with 40 in Mod SC (4 full heats). I ran slicks all around in the first 2 qualifiers and got the TQ spot for each round with the only runs at 17 laps. In the 3rd round, traction was even a better than it has been all weekend, making my front tires hooking up a little too much and having a little too much steering on this high speed layout. A couple of traction roll cost me the 3rd round, where I got a second place. I then used worn out Rattler in clay compound in the front and got right back on top of Round 4, wrapping it up with a 3rd TQ on round 4 to definitely secure the TQ spot for the mains.

The 4 most popular classes (stock and mod buggy, mod truck and mod SC) got to run Triple A-mains. In A1 main, using the same tire combo and after a very settled setup change, I was able to wheel my SC-R to the win with a flawless run (a few seconds ahead of second place) blazing through traffic taking advantage of the very consistent steering I was getting with the Rattlers in the front. I went out for A2 hoping to wrap it up. Top 4 quickly got away from the rest of the field. My SC-R again was very consistent, and I was able to hold on to the lead until lap traffic with about a 4 second lead on second place. Lap traffic hold me up a little to the point that 2nd place was back within a half a second. After lap traffic, I was able to turn fast laps, holding the inside line with all the traction I needed and open up my lead to a comfortable 6sec, and then cruised to the finish line to take the overall win in A2. My tire choice was definitely what gave my the advantage to hold the tight lines to keep the lead and blaze through traffic with confidence. Awesome weekend for Panther Tires!”
